World Series of Poker met on the Rio

When the World Series of Poker met on the Rio All Suites Hotel and Casino, the organizers for the 2005 event assumed that the huge groups of fans would cause some tournament problems. Harrah’s Entertainment, who was in charge of tournament issues, did a wonderful job in maintaining order. While people who love to play casino games are known for their love of a good time, this year Harrah’s will do its best to keep everything under control.

In 2004 Harrah’s Entertainment purchased the original home of the World Series of Poker, Binions. Even though the purchase of the outdated building helped the 2004 WSOP come to life, the venue had seen the tournament for the last time. With the growing numbers of people who play casino games, especially poker fans, the WSOP has made a jump to becoming the largest tournament of its kind.

With a larger tournament, came a larger building, the Amazon Ballroom at the Rio All Suites Hotel and Casino. The room itself is large enough to fit over 200 poker tables, which sounds great, but came with a lot of problems that will need to be solved for this year.

Problem number one- no bathroom! Okay there were bathrooms, but the Amazon itself held around 3,000 players, plus vendors, employees and fans. Each break became a huge bathroom rush, with players racing against the clock to make it back to each game. Especially problematic was the lack of ladies rooms. During the Ladies No Limit tournament the over 600 competitors found more than a few problems with the lack of facilities!

While getting to the bathroom is always a relieving experience, once that’s taken care of is the next major problem, a lack of nearby restaurants or food vendors. Although the casino hotel is full of fancy restaurants, finding food within walking distance didn’t work out so well.

The Amazon room was no picnic either. Players had to wait in long lines at the one cage for the event, and the lack of tournament clocks available kept some critical information out of players hands. Either way the 2006 World Series of Poker has a few major changes that need to take place.

Now, Jeffery Pollack, the new Commissioner of the World Series of Poker, is well aware of last years problems. With Pollack at the lead, this years tournament is looking better already!
